Other Ministries

Because life is short and unpredictable, social work is short term help. Spiritual help carries permanent and forever consequences. We cannot ignore the suffering we see with our eyes; it breaks our heart. So we rush to help when and where we can, but keeping our eyes fixed on the permanent and eternal goal of our ministry.

Below is a list of ministries we are involved in.

Refugee Help

The earthquake of 12 January will be remembered for a long time to come. Over 200,000 people were killed as a result of the quake, and millions were left homeless. The government prison in Port au Prince was destroyed as well, loosing hundreds of kidnappers, murderers, and thieves. Because of the devastation, danger from thieves, and hunger, many have fled the capital to live with relatives in the country. We helped with the transportation of these refugees by sending our bus to Port au Prince and bring people to St. Raphael so that they could seek refuge with family.

We also have helped distribute rice and other food stuffs, sandals, clothes, tents, and sleeping bags that caring people have purchased stateside and sent to aid the refugees in their distress. Many of our church families were living in crowded conditions before the quake. Since the influx of refugees there are twice as many people living in many of these small mud houses. Our next project is to use some of the relief money to help alleviate this situation.

Sanitation

I buy my food here every Tuesday! This is where we regularly buy our vegetables and some food stuffs. The garbage is often left to rot in huge piles for months at a time before it's removed. Usually, the garbage piles up until it looks like this before the people begin to riot in the street. When the people begin to riot, then the government makes an effort to clean it up.

From time to time we use the church forum to give public information seminars to alert people to the dangers of poor sanitation. I preached a New Years message from Deuteronomy 23:12-14 (read it!) titled, "Build a Latrine."

We have also been involved in building public latrines to help with the problem of sanitation.
