Our Purpose & What We Believe
We moved to Haiti in 1999 to work in a Bible seminary that had been started by missionary Evan Shaffer. Our objective was to effectively tell people about Jesus the Christ and to teach the Bible. Our purpose in doing so, was to help people understand what the Bible asks us to do if we want to go to heaven, ...
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
and to help those who are already saved understand what the Bible teaches us to do so that we can mature in our faith and please God with our lives.
1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
Religion is often biased, controlling, and organized to make money. Jesus himself was critical of religion in that respect. Jesus used more than harsh words with the money pandering "church leaders and pastors."
John 2:13-16 ... Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: and when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; and said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.
So, it's important to note that God doesn't want you to be religious, but he wants to establish a personal relationship with you. He wants to know you personally, because He loves you and cares about you. That's what the Bible is all about. There are harsh realities in the Bible, which make it hard to read and accept, just like there are the harsh realities of Haiti like starvation and voodoo satan worhip, which make it a hard place to live. The worlds a tough place and life is hard. But truth is truth. The Bible gives us the truth while giving us a light at the end of the tunnel.
Here is the truth the Bible gives us: People do what's wrong, we all sin. Nobody's perfect !
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
But, the harsh reality of you and I not being perfect is that, to get to heaven we have to be perfect.
Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
God is perfect and just and always obeys the law. He has to uphold the law.
Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Because God is just and must punish sin, and we sin; He must condenm us to hell just like the law says. But, there's the light at the end of the tunnel. God is just and has to do what's right, but he loves and has found a way to be just and to save us from ourselves at the same time. Don't you understand? God wants us to go to heaven, he made heaven for us. But we chose and choose sin instead. What's easier: to do what's right or do what everyone else does?, to be honest on your taxes or cheat on your taxes? Sin carries consequences, the paycheck for sin is hell. We all deserve it. No one deserves heaven - that's the harsh reality of the Bible. But the light at the end of the tunnel is this ...
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
The name of Jesus is important. Jesus is God turned man ! God became man with the express purpose to give his life to pay the penalty of your sin and mine.
John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Each one of us has a debt that has to be paid, it's a sin debt with God. The important thing is that Jesus already paid the debt. Faith is how the credit gets transfered to your account. Faith is what it takes for Jesus to pardon your sin.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
But, faith is more than just simple believing. Faith is a lifechanging decision to place your life in God's hands, for Him to control as he will.
James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
That means if you trust in Jesus, you will want to do what the Bible says and obey him. Have you made a decision to trust Christ? If you have't, do it today. You can pray a simple prayer like this ...
Dear God, I recognize I am a sinner and deserve to go to hell. Please forgive me and come into my life; make me your child and help me to live a holy life. In Jesus name, Amen.
