We moved to Haiti in 1999 to help teach and work in Mountainview Bible College (L’Ecole Biblique du Mont BelleVue). Pastor Evan Shaffer had started the Bible college in 1979 in Cap Haitian, and after four years, moved away from the city and into the mountains close to the township of St. Raphael. When we arrived in Haiti, Pastor Evan retired and moved back to the United States. He has since passed away, but remains an example and motivating factor in our desire to "train Haitians to reach Haitians for Christ."

We spent our first term (1999-2003) in Lina, living in the same building where we held seminary classes. Just before we went stateside for a year furlough, we bought property on the south side of St. Raphael in Walondry and began the construction of a campus there. Upon our return in 2004, we began with a new group of students and changed the name of the seminary to Maranatha Theological Seminary.

We love Walondry and enjoy the fresh air that the beautiful mango, avocado, coconut, and citrus trees provide. The political climate is a little more stable here, and we have a measure of peace and quiet being off the main road. We are also able to structure our activities and provide a controlled atmosphere in chaotic times because our property is surrounded by a block wall fence.

Seminary Programs

Maranatha Theological Seminary has three branches; the Full Time Program, the Extension Program, and the Module Program.

The Full Time Program has a four year curriculum designed for high school graduates desiring to study God's Word. Most of the classes are taught in block/module format, which allows pastors and teachers from the States to come to Haiti for a three week period and teach a class.

The Extension Program is designed for pastors who have family and ministry obligations which prevents them from participating in a full time program. It has 24 in depth Bible courses which are taught on Saturdays. An active student can normally complete 2-3 courses per semester, which will allow him to complete the program and graduate in 4 years.

The Module Program has ten modules designed for lay people in the church with little or no Bible training. We teach three modules per year which allows the more active student to finish in three and a half years. The objective of the Module Program is to provide church laypeople with a basic understanding of Bible doctrine which will help them to actively serve Christ in their church. This program has been operating for 15 years and has over 700 students who have participated in these Bible classes.
